FMCSA Entry level driving Training rules include both theory and behind-the-wheel instruction. Training must be provided by a company listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry (TPR).

Driver-trainees do not have to spend a minimum number of hours on theory instruction, but the instructor must cover all the topics outlined in the curriculum.

The overall minimum score of 80% on the theory modules and assessment is the basic requirement for the driver-trainee.

Behind-the-wheel training does not have a minimum number of hours to be spent, but the instructor must cover all topics covered in the curriculum.

Each driver-trainee must demonstrate proficiency in all elements of the behind-the-wheel curriculum and the instructor must document it. A complete behind-the-wheel curriculum must be documented by the instructor, as well as the total clock hours for each driver-trainee.

The mandatory training (Both the theory and behind-the-wheel training) can only be provided by certified providers approved by FMCSA and listed on the Training Provider Registry.

If the training provider does not meet ELDT requirements, they could be removed from the Training Provider Registry.
